Award-winning film scorer Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Lion King) teams up with the Jigs (said to include the film's director, Barry Levinson) to fashion this spirited bout of Celtic revelry and Irish mourning. While director Levinson takes a comic approach to this tale of two wig salesmen bound by friendship but potentially divided by the politico-religious implications of their differing faiths, Zimmer's score features a series of tunes ("One Hundred and Ninety," "Day Job") that underlines the forlorn gravity of the situation. Titles such as "Toupee or Not-Toupee," "I'm a Dick" and "F**kin' Genius" also indicate that Zimmer mastered the film's comedic moments. "Dick" is ironically titled as it turns out to be a sensitive finger-picked ballad, while "Toupee" veers into synthetic rock territory with mechanical beats supporting amplified fiddles. Zimmer also incorporates elements of delta blues, as the mutated moans of "The Rant" and the dutiful slide work of "You Gotta Lose to Win" amply demonstrate. --Rob O'Connor

CD Reviews

"Hans Zimmer goes Celtic with The Jigs"
J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 01/10/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Director Barry Levinson, with screenplay by Barry McEvoy give us a tale of two young men who ask the question - "Toupee or Not Toupee", the answer could be in the uplifting celtic score by Hans Zimmer and The Jigs.Zimmer who has earned Academy Awards, Grammys, Golden Globe Awards and Tony's with such memorable scores - "THE LION KING", "AS GOOD AS IT GETS", "CRIMSON TIDE", "THE THIN RED LINE", "DRIVING MISS DAISY", "BACKDRAFT", "RAIN MAN", "DROP ZONE", "THELMA & LOUISE", "MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE FILM K2"...and 1986 Oscar-winning score joined by David Byrne and Ryuichi Sakamoto for "THE LAST EMPEROR", one of my all-time personal favorites.Varese Sarabande, Hans Zimmer and The Jigs make magnificent strides in fusing celtic themes with original instruments for the films story-line, the entire score is outstanding in content...a great listen...so New Age genre and "film-score-buffs", this is a keeper!Total Time: 41:55 on 16 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 066202...(2000)"
