The unmistakable, irreplacable sound of The Brothers Everly
Martin Jay (jojoh@bigpond.com) | AUSTRALIA | 11/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an 'alternative'selection, from the Brothers' three 'post re-union'albums, featuring some of music's biggest names, in studio sessions. Away from the Concert platform, the individual voices of the Don and Phil are strongly featured, proving their considerable solo talents, among those unique harmonies:- Don's superb 'middle eight' on "That Uncertain Feeling": Phil's (almost impossible) top line on - surely, one of their all-time best - "...Cadillac". McCartney's soaring and joyful "...Nightingale" contribution - and the moaning, fretless base, on Don's "Asleep"...For those who believe in time travel...back to "Sleepless Nights" purity, on Knopfler's "Why Worry" - and drama on Phil's "Brown Eyes". How do they maintain it! The Everlies influenced so many great artists and, illustrated in this, their later work, it is easy to see just why. They are irreplacable treasures of modern popular music, deservant of greater profile, both together and as individuals. Far beyond the numerous and over-played 'hits' volumes, this is as exciting and beautiful a collection, as ever. It's only a pity, we don't have the full three-album set. I wish they'd do more: together or solo. Listen and savour!"
A fabulous phase of a stellar career
K. Bealle | Darien, CT USA | 12/18/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These songs represent a more upbeat, consciously-produced period for the Everlys. Some of the arrangements lack the purity of their earlier Cadence and Warner recordings, but you have to appreciate the song selection--some of Don Everly's best work, not to mention the best song Paul McCartney wrote in 10-12 years. Producer Dave Edmunds could have lightened up on the echo and orchestration a bit because the Everlys need less of that kind of help than almost any act ever recorded, but these are still essential and moving tracks."
The Everly Brothers grow up
W. Walsh | Naperville, Illinois | 02/05/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is obvious that these songs on these cd's are far better than anything they have ever sung before. They had hits with simple, basic, fairly written songs early in their career.

Now, with wonderfully written, and beautifully performed songs, these will be nown as their peak years. These songs and their delivery are far superior to any early year hits.

They got better, not older.

"Always buy a Cadillac", their alltime best, along with Born Yesterday,Solitary Hearts, etc.

If you only buy 1, this is it"
