"This album consists of live recordings of Evgeny Kissin made between the ages of 12 and 14. All I can say is, better to hear a genius at that age than a mediocre mature pianist in his prime. The main work, of course, is Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, recorded when Kissin was 13. His sonority was not yet as great as it would become in his 20's, but in every other respect this sounds like the work of a mature artist. Passagework is brilliant and refined, while slower episodes reveal a pianist with poise and delicacy. The orchestra is excellent. I have not heard Kissin's studio recording of this Concerto, but if you're not in the business of making comparisons, this is a reading fully comparable to anything you are likely to hear. The four Visions Fugitives, from a 14 year old Kissin, are beautifully characterized, while the Two Inventions Kissin composed himself are interesting Bachian episodes that make one wish the pianist had continued as a composer. Sound engineering thoughout the disc, from Melodiya, is excellent, and the only drawback is the short playing time, about 38 minutes. If you are fascinated by Kissin's early talent, or if you just want to hear some first-rate Prokofiev, this is the disc for you."
