CD Reviews

If you like early Entombed, you'll like this...
Brutal Death | Australia | 09/03/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In my opinion, two of the greatest bands lost from the death metal genre are Entombed and Dark Throne. Both of these bands had killer death metal first releases (left Hand Path for Entombed and Soulside Journey for Dark Throne), but then Entombed went on a bit of a strange tangent from their second release onwards and Dark Throne took on a more Black Metal sound and for death metal purists like me, it was a sad time. This, however, brings me to this release from Evocation - this is probably the direction Entombed would have gone if they had stuck with the style of their original release. Tales from the Tomb sounds a LOT like Left Hand Path - even to the point of covering "But Life Goes On" (and doing a good job of it - don't get me wrong). It's like a cross between "Left Hand Path" and Dismember's "...Like an Everflowing Stream". The vocals are ok, but they're not Lars Goran Petrov, but all in all this is a very solid release from Evocation. I know I'm making a lot of comparisons to Entombed, but the fact is these guys do sound very much like a cross between them and Dismember and at the end of the day, if you like "Left Hand Path" and that kind of sound, you'll like "Tales from the Tomb". It slots nicely into a collection housing the likes of Entombed, Carnage, Dismember and other bands with that crunchy guitar riff kind of sound."
