Clear, crisp voice

"I've owned this on vinyl for years and it's one that I love to listen to. Ms Gorme's voice is clear. Her diction may be American, but it's as crisp as the English accent of Dame Cleo Laine. "I'll take Romance" is a 4/4 setting of a song written in 3/4 and this gives it a boisterous urgency that most recordings lack. "The Gentleman is a Dope" is a straightforward statement of the facts, and "Guess who I saw Today" tells its story with a wistfulness that makes it all the more poignant. Along with Doris Day, Eydie Gorme is one of the most underrated "girl singers" from the 50s. It's good to see her stuff on CD."

A superior "pop" singer, and a set of HIGH standards

"Eydie Gorme has more in common with Sarah Vaughan, than your average 1950's pop singer. Gorme swings, as well as Keely Smith, or Kay Starr, and she has a way with the popular American song. Here on this cd re-issure of her 1st lp, we have 12 gorgeous tunes arranged by Don Costa(who also arranged many of Sinatra's lp's). Gorme gives superior treatment and swings throughout. Gorme truly was a hero to adults in the late 50's, she sang beautiful and swinging music, and maintained her popularity without selling out to rock'n'roll. One of the few artists in the 50's(along with Rosemary Clooney and Tony Bennett), who didn't sell out and record kiddy pop(maybe with the acception of the awful "Blame It On The Bossa Nova", which wasn't exactly Charlie Byrd or Stan Getz' idea of Bossa Nova). This CD is especially recommended to those who don't feel that Gorme falls into the jazz ganere, well she does. Here Gorme is a jazz singer. Well worth acquiring."
