"Fabrizio De Andre's narrative talent and sharp irony show even in his earliest songs. His language is terse and insightful like that of such chanteurs as Leonard Cohen and Georges Brassens, whom he often translated. (He also contrived his own rendition of Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River".) The music usually refers immediately to the Italian tradition, from the waltz to the ballad: no Americanisms or French ways. A rare example of true originality."
