"This is an interesting supplement to the classic recording with Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison. I have ready elswhere about some criticism of Te Kanawa's Eliza I actually found her performance the most convincing of the lot. She is very good at the cockneyed British accent and, as always, her tone is gorgeous. Jerry Hadley sings a beautiful "On the Street Where You Live." The main misgivings I have with this recording is Jeromy Iron's portrayal of Henry Higgins. To me his voice (speaking and singing) is too gruff and unpleasant for this artistocratic role. Granted, Higgins is a part that requires more acting ability than singing; however, the voice should be distinctive, clear, and expressive. Iron's voice is certainly unique, but, too me at least, it sounds too sinister and harsh."

"Te Kanawa is superb. Not quite as cliche as the movie, but very close.

Mr. Higgins is completely lost. Unfortunately, Rex Harrison is the ONLY Henry Higgins that will ever be any good at it. The man on this CD is too slow in THE RAIN IN SPAIN.

The Ascot Gavotte does not have enough people singing, and there are no horse imitations, so unless you know about Ascot or have seen the movie, you'll have no idea what the pause is for.

In counter to the wretched Mr. Higgins and the lacking Chorus, the Orchestra is with Te Kanawa in its saving power, the only saving grace that this relatively lacking Cd has, besides the lyricism of ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE.



Personally, I would suggest that you spend your money on the play or the Movie soundtrack or the Original cast."
