This is one of those records that stands the test of time remarkably well. I remember hearing "Epic" on the radio when I lived in L.A. in 1990. My initial reaction was that it was goofy and embarrassing, yet also brilliant. A bunch of white-boy metal-heads doing a rap-song at that time was a frequent enough embarrassment, but somehow their knack for the hook let you know that there's something else deeper and more intense about Faith No More. The scope of the music here is far too broad to allow for simple genre classification or accusations of gimmicks. The Real Thing needs to be lived with. It's deep enough, both lyrically and musically, to be explored and ingested. The themes of life's purpose, death, and re-birth are woven together in haunting narrative and always with the brilliant and infectious musical dexterity of a killer metal band that transcends the limitations of the genre. The goofiness, in retrospect, is proof of the genuine nature of the band, a band that required no artifice or fashion sense. There is no pose here, only a wellspring of creative impulse and the uninhibited desire to rock out. With its myriad textures, dynamics, and moods, this is a complete album, to be heard in its entirety, now and for as long as it holds you. Hearing it again now after not owning it for a decade, it's clear that this is a masterpiece.
