While the Fall's paranoiac pulse and vocalist Mark E. Smith's yawping vocals always benefited from studio confinement, they made a great showing with this 1988 live set. "Kurious Oranj" and "Frenz" present Smith's more theatrical side; his ragged rants are egged on by the angled, atonal music. The band outdoes itself, however, with a charming take on the Kinks' "Victoria." But where the Kinks were wistful for lost times on such outings as Village Green Preservation Society, the Fall show only frustration at their surroundings. Call it an unrelenting storm from the land (and time--remember, the Fall formed in 1977) that launched snarly political punk. Smith had intensified his pretensions by the late '80s, and he makes a convincing madman here. You've got to hear his between-song disquisition, non sequiturs and all: "A bit later I'm going to tell you about how I made the fortune of punk rock. Since I think that music starts with Johann Sebastian Bach and ends with Franz Schubert, you're going to have to listen a bit later about my interview on television, the first that ever had bad language." Huh? --Andrew Bartlett

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an album so hated by the Fall that one bandmember called it a "contractual abortion obligation." Why is it hated? I don't know. It is sloppy in production and the overall feel is that they needed to fill it up with live takes to make it last 60 minutes. But you know what? Who cares? Fall fans love this underproduced noise. It's classic post-punk and all the live songs are among the best from the studio albums. The 5 studio tracks are good too, with the exception of one Mollusc in Tyrol sounding like the band forgot to edit in the guitar work, leaving just synthesizer noises and a spoken word babbling."
Raw,noisy,scratchy......and loving it!

"Now we all know that music critics are a bunch of impotent wankers. And anybody that complains about the recording quality of a punk band just doesn't get it. Seminal is raunchy live Fall. Just like they allways sounded live. This is one of my top three favorite Fall albums. Witch Trials and Early Fall are put together better, but this is still some great music. If you want perfection, go buy a Rush album and take a nap!"
