Synopsis

Music for Little People trot out their superb stable of big-voiced cutie pies for the first in their new Family Matinee series, Let's Go to the Movies. Let's Sing a Bunch of Disney Songs might have been a better title, though, because in 12 tunes, not a single other studio is covered. Such a distinction should stymie only those on Disney detox; for the rest of us, the curtain's raised on a fairy tale-fueled, four-star show. A righteous Louis Armstrong in training socks it to "The Bare Necessities"; "Colors of the Wind," soaked in sincerity, commands repeat performances; and a decidedly unspotty rendition of the "101 Dalmatians" nugget finds Cruella DeVil strapping on and plugging in her Fender Stratocaster. Fun forays into dustier Disney corners ("The Unbirthday Song" from Alice in Wonderland, "When I See an Elephant Fly" from Dumbo) dish up equally entertaining rewards, and a sunny "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" should get the whole gang um-diddle-diddling. The kids and the skilled production make this set worth unwrapping, so cast aside any Disney overkill concerns if you can. If, on the other hand, you're apt to wander in the land of Alice and her ilk all on your own, then, as the opening song on this CD goes, be our guest. --Tammy La Gorce
