Synopsis

Album Description

Already an incontestable figure in the Scandinavian music scene, Maja Ratkje follows the release of her stunning first solo album, Voice (Rune Grammaphone), with Syklubb Fra Hælvete. A compulsive musician who, in addition to her main activity as part of all-female avant-garde free-improvisation quartet Spunk, is a lecturer in composition at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, a world-renowned contemporary composer, an impressive singer and an accomplished musician who has recorded with Norwegian accordionist Frode Haltli and Jazzkammer. Together with fellow Spunk-ette Hild Sofie Tafjord, Ratkje improvises with analogue electronic gear, samplers, vocals, harmonica and miscellaneous acoustic instruments to shape a more defined, delicate series of soundscapes. Adding Ratkje?s voice to the distortions and feedback, the pair develops the experimentations created by Spunk. Hailed by Thurston Moore as the most exciting noise record ever released, Syklubb Fra Hælvete is intriguing and disturbing, yet manages to capture the imagination by remaining firmly focused all the way through.

"I don't own this album, but have heard some cuts off of it, and I saw these ladies open for Wolf Eyes last Friday. They were absolutely awesome, not to mention vary atractive. I felt really bad after the show when I realized that I didn't purchase anything of their's from the murch table, so I am going to order this album from this site. If you are a new comer to noise or a full blown noise anthuziast (probably not too healthy for you if you only listen to noise)you will enjoy this. The shear power of Fe-mail rivles that of Wolf Eyes. (another awesome noise group to check out) or maybe even Mersbow? Ok I'll probably get smited by the gods of noise for saying that, but these gals are brutal beyond Belief. If you find out that they are comeing to your town or close to your general area with Wolf Eyes or any time, I recommend you go and check it out. Both groups are literally mind blowing live. Unlike Wolf Eyes though, Fe-mail is a duo comprised of accomplished musicians. (the trio of Wolf boys admited that they don't have a whole lot of actual musical talent) but that's ok, I love what they do and they are quite accomplished at that. Any ways, get this album, along with some of Wolf Eyes stuff, and then check out Black Dice and Animal Collective too."
