A wonderful summation

"This Final Sessions release captures Arrau's tone better than any CD album I have heard. From the intial English Suites, all four of which were recorded during Arrau's Debussy sessions in Switzerland. The Beethoven is from Arrau's final Beethoven cycle, left incomplete at the time of his death and vary somewhat from his 60's set containig the concerto's and variations.

The Schubert is wonderful. I can imagine a better vehicle for Arrau's wonderful sound and legato than D894. The Debussy, attainable only on Warner France, is also very incitful. Arrau does not subscribe to the Gieseking haze, but rather combines a germanic profundity with Michelangli's precision.

I recommend this for Arrau fans-though the devoted fan will probably have much of this already. Remember-much of this is different from his previous releases

"For those who may be wondering (as I was) - Amazon's description states "6 CDs". But they did in fact ship the 7 CD set. CDs 1&2 are Bach, CDs 3&4 are Beethoven, CDs 5&6 are Schubert, and CD 7 is Debussy."

Final Sessions with Maestro Arrau

"Claudio Arrau, like a fine wine continued to get better with age. The set begins with a selection of Bach's Partitas, all of which are fabulous. Claudio Arrau although knew Bach's works well, he did not play them too often throughout his career since he believed at an early age that they were more suited for a harpsichord over a pianoforte. This was not the case for Schubert, as Arrau performed many of his Sonatas, Impromptus and Moment Musicaux's throughout his career. His interpretations of the Moment Musicaux are worthy of being mentioned when discussing definitive recordings of the work. Included as well are a selection of Beethoven's Sonatas. They are all soundly played as Arrau performed all of Beethoven's Sonatas and Piano Concerti in his lifetime. The box set finishes with Claude Debussy. Arrau recorded all the Debussy Preludes and Images in his vast career, he was never known for his Debussy recordings in comparison to Liszt or Beethoven. When listening to Arrau's recordings of Debussy they are completely different in sound in comparison to his peers Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli or Alfred Cortot, but they are beautiful interpretations."
