Once my expectations were squared away - this is the "high 80s" in a big way - this record quickly revealed its many charms. It's an excellent record, all of a piece, with all the sweetness, spaciness, and weirdness we've come to expect from this amazing lineup of this superb band. By the way, Tango in the Night is the band's second-biggest seller, after Rumours.
I already knew the four Top-20 hits: "Big Love" (#5), "Seven Wonders" (#19), "Little Lies" (#4), and "Everywhere" (#14). Additionally, three other tracks were released as singles: "Family Man" (#90), "Tango in the Night" (didn't chart), and "Isn't It Midnight" (#60 in the UK). I'm not crazy about "Isn't It Midnight" - I find it a bit generic - but I really enjoy the other two.
For fans of Stevie Nicks, there's not whole a lot here. It seems she was spending most of her energy on her solo career at this time. "Seven Wonders" was a big hit, but she's credited only with "additional lyrics" on it. Her two compositions, neither of which were released as singles, are tucked away on side 2. "Welcome To The Room...Sara" is great. "When I See You Again" will probably be loved by Nicks fans. I like it all right, but she's too expressive on it for my tastes. It's akin to "Beautiful Child" from Tusk.
Right now my favorite non-single tracks are the Buckingham/McVie songs that close each side: "Mystified" and "You And I, Part II".
So there you have it. An outstanding effort and their last major hit until the live reunion album "The Dance" twelve years later.
