Electronic Bossa Nova Solos and Jams
Marcelo Xuxu | Berlin, Germany | 11/06/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"New bossa nova listners normally come up with such remarks like: hey, it is quite modern! Actually bossa was born very modern. Circular, harmonic melodies plus subtile drums lead you into a soft trance, in the same fashion of astonishing (or stoned) beach sunsets. This trance purpose comes from the early 60's and was originally meant by bossanova musicians to get laid. At this point similarities with experimental jazz are undeniable. After a good while of hard and punk rocking, Flu comes back to his real self: innovative strings, smart and colourfull rhythms electronically blended into joy and tranquility. Of course you can dance. But there will be sand instead of waiting-to-be-punished parkets beneath your feet. And no shoes between you and the ground. And more: Flu allows his musicians experimentalism. It will not sound like Suba, Bebel Gilberto or other new good artists replaying bossa nova with new instruments. Old instruments will appear, but electronic elements are added in it's autentical - sometimes chaotic - way. I would highly typ: Gruvi (track 6), Cuca Danca (3), Tchururu (1), Cantando e Brincando (8), Mama (12) and specially Jet (14). Then put yourself in a beautiful beach, ask for some Caipirinha drink, and enjoy life. If you happen to spot a long haired, quiet fellow wearing glasses and firmly staring at the horizont, this might be Flu."
