The "modern-nostalgic" band Populuxe was formed in 1999. "Pete and I have known each other since junior high school" Rob Shapiro, the band's songwriter/lead singer/guitarist spoke of band member Pete Straub who plays the drums. Pete and Rob started out in New York where they and a guy by the name of Josh Segal, who played the violin and horns, and Joe Zimmerman, who played the bass came together in 1998 and made an album. This would be the first project done by the two current Populuxe members. "a foggy day in brooklyn," purposly left in all lower-case letters, Shapiro describes it as the "band's way," would place Populuxe on the map. In 1999, Pete and Rob made a move to Los Angeles, Calif. In late 2000, they began working on another record. Desperate to find a third member who would not only live up to their expectations, but also be a perfect blend, the two placed an ad in the newspaper. A guy named Joshua Pickering answered their call. "When we met Josh, we knew he was the one," Rob said in an interview. "We just clicked, yeah, we came together perfectly." Now, as the third member of Populuxe, Josh plays the guitar and keys, and the group is complete.
