In her profile of Paul Lansky in the current issue of CAKE, Hap Mansfield writes: "It's hard to imagine having more fun that opening a jewelbox with the latest Lansky compositions on it and treating your ears to the remarkable musical gifts he doles out so generously. Lansky's music perches you, fully aware on the edges of the subconscious universe." Folk Images is Lansky's latest Bridge CD...the instruments are guitar, violin, computer, occasional voice...the music - settings and arrangements of well-known folk songs, as well as original folk-like tunes. Lansky writes: "These pieces, arrangements and settings attempt to distill, emulate, and paraphrase some of the things I love best about folk music: jangling, frantic guitar sounds; melancholy tunes which have aged just enough to sound distant and odd; triumphant displays of ?sold your soul to the devil' virtuosity and nostalgia for the ?30s." In Folk Images, funk, blues, new-age, and old-timey are given an aural face-lift. The result is a fresh view of familiar material - a new look at music that has stood the test of time.
