CD Reviews

Another excellent collection from Mick and Tony
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 12/13/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There was a time when songs were specially written for movie soundtracks, but while that still happens sometimes, a lot of movies simply make use of songs that have already proved popular. Some of these songs are chosen because they fit the story line while others have absolutely nothing to do with the movie whatsoever, except perhaps that some snippet of the song is heard playing on the jukebox in the background. So movie songs these days can include just about any popular oldie, or so it seems. Never is this more evident than in Foster and Allen's collection of movie songs, many of which were just written as potential hits with never a thought of them being used in a movie. Some of them even became movie theme songs.

With so many popular hits having been used in movies to choose from, together with those songs that were written specifically for movies, Foster and Allen were spoiled for choice in selecting songs for this collection, notwithstanding the need to exclude any qualifying tracks that they'd included on earlier double CD collections (hence the absence of, for example, Unchained melody).

About half the tracks here were drawn from albums that Foster and Allen recorded prior to beginning their series of double CD's. Mostly, they've stayed with a repertoire that most of their fans will instantly recognize but occasionally they've selected relatively obscure songs. Elvis Presley's No more (from Blue Hawaii) is not one of his most famous movie songs, while Heartsong, a Dolly Parton song, serves to remind people that even her less famous songs are of a high quality.

This is yet another fine collection from Foster and Allen, whose popularity shows no sign of abating. They rarely if ever record original material these days, but their fans (including myself) don't care about that, especially as they sometimes remind us of songs we'd half-forgotten about."
