CD Reviews

FOUR FRESHMEN AND FIVE STARS
C. V. Garnett | Washington, DC United States | 02/12/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"First off, I must admit to being a Four Freshmen fan--spelled n-u-t. I have every one of the Capital LP albums the group recorded--even the 10-inch version of "Voices in Modern." So you may want to add a couple of grains of salt to this review before swallowing it. Nevertheless, that disclaimer stated, this CD represents a fine collection of great Frosh songs and arrangements from various albums. I'd have to single out such Freshmen standards as "How Can I Tell Her" "The Day Isn't Long Enough" and "Street of Dreams," as pure Freshmen fare, while "It's a Blue World" is the group's signature piece. Then "We'll Be Together Again," the wonderful Frankie Laine/Carl Fischer song of goodbye ("Don't let the blues make you bad"). On "Day By Day" Bob Flanigan's trombone solo alone is worth the price of admission. You can enjoy the Freshmen commercial hit, "Graduation Day," then jump to their lesser known "Mr. B.'s Blues"--that's Billy Eckstine's blues, the man who wrote it--with the guys doing some fine instrumental wailing. (It could be called "Let's Have a Party 'Cause I Ain't Gonna Cry At All.") Believe me, you won't, you can't, go wrong with this collection by the true fabulous four."

"I enjoyed the songs I heard but since I am familiar with all of the FF's things, I can say that it was great automatically. I have been a fan of theirs (won't give away my age) since I was in junior high school in Cleveland. The minute I heard them I knew I was hooked forever!! That's how it is with this type of music. I now enjoy hearing the new Four Freshman and seeing them perform in Cleveland at Nighttown (I visit once a year and have been lucky to fall on them). Anyone interested in talking about them, write me. Joyce s"
