Before all that jazz

"Viridiana Productions down in New Orleans is dedicated to preserving the old and creating the new in Ragtime and allied musical forms, especially for the keyboard. So I was particularly interested in hearing (VBRD 2005) with Frank French as soloist. The 12 tracks include among the rest "Danza," "Bamboula," "Tournament Galop," and my personal favorite "Miserere du Trovatore, Paraphrase de Concert." Since most of my other recordings by this highly influential composer are orchestrated versions, there is little I have with which to compare Mr. French's playing. Although I enjoyed it very much, I find a certain lack of that final bit of sparkle this music seems to call for. But this might be the influence of the orchestrated offerings I have heard and the artist is playing the pieces as written. He is technically fine and this CD is recommended with only that single qualification--which, I insist, might be in my ear only."
