"The buzz associated with the new discovery of an overlooked artist that resulted from the posthumous release by Smalls Records of Frank Hewitt's first recording has subsided. Listeners can now evaluate Hewitt without the subliminal affect of the hype and critical accolades that were bestowed on the first recording. "Fresh From the Cooler", is the fourth posthumous release by Smalls Records, but it is actually the earliest document of Hewitt.Recorded in 1996, it is the third trio recording and features his standing trio of Ari Roland on bass and drummer Jimmy Lovelace. And what do these ears that hopefully have not been unduly influenced hear? A fresh bop piano trio recording that when considered along with the other three releases confirms that Hewitt was an imaginative improviser definitely deserving of a better fate and greater recognition during his lifetime than he received. The trio's interpretations of these eight tunes from the jazz reparatory will reveal surprises on repeated listens. Check it out."
Will somebody please resuscitate Mr. Frank Hewitt.
