Synopsis

The late Frank Wright was an R&B bassist until, under the influence of Albert Ayler, he switched to tenor sax. On 1967's Your Prayer, his second and final recording for ESP-DISK, he leads a quintet composed for the most part of other past and future associates of Ayler's. The five tracks are free jazz at its most energetic and least restrained. Brief unison themes are stated and then the soloists explode. Wright's R&B background is constantly in evidence, sometimes in his exuberant honking, elsewhere as he abandons his horn altogether and simply screams or moans. He was sadly under-recorded and this record (not to mention its predecessor, Frank Wright Trio) shouldn't be missed. --David Wolf
