CD Reviews

Same of Freddie's most creative playing
Joseph A. Gross | Nashville, Tennessee, USA | 04/24/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Freddie was at his creative peak here, particularly on I Love You. Perhaps the most complete jazz trumpeter of all time, Hubbard's versatility and improvisational virtuosity are on full display on Above and Beyond. The way Freddie can play such simple ideas in such complexed ways, and such beautiful, intricate melodies in such simple ways shows his mastery as a spontaneous composer. A must for any true Freddie Hubbard fan, a joy for any jazz fan, and great music for anyone."
Freddie's best
KT | East coast - USA | 07/21/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There's no way to exagerate how spectacular this recording is. It feels like Freddie and band drop a bomb at this live set. Legend of Henderson no-show is a great story that only adds to the listening pleasure. The band is great (including a young Billy Childs and already giants Lou Haynes & Herb Lewis) and is Freddie is on fire. With especially trumpeters, it will forever be impossible to narrow down to the "best trumpeter" other than to the obvious group of Diz, Morgan, Armstrong, Navarro, Hubbard and one or two others. After hearing this, it would be hard to argue against anyone putting Hubbard at the top of the list. As any long time jazz fan knows, it's hard to run across a recording that truly stands out (amongst all the competent Blue Note, Prestige and other recordings). This one does. It's simply incredible. Makes one wonder against why, in a profession, where the artists involved tour constantly, why more live sets (especially of the legends) weren't put on record. Incidently, the audio problems that people mention, to me, are overblown. The sound quality is just fine. Go out and get this one."
