CD Reviews

Nice and rough.
David Messer | Sydney, Australia | 01/31/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Old time music played the way it should be - with passion and finesse but still nice and rough sounding. David Bass's fiddle is beyond impressive, but the band as a whole really cooks. They're so tight and rockin' that it's easy to forget that there's no drummer here. An antidote to an encroaching slickness in a lot of contemporary bluegrass."
A brilliant album in the old-time tradition
David Messer | 06/17/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rock solid rythm, powerful fiddling, impressive vocals, and an energetic presentation brings these tunes soaring to life. Irresistable dance tunes and bone chiilling ballads are done with equal skill and intensity. The problem of old-time music losing it's punch in recorded form simply does not exist here."
Totally worth it
T. Lalley | washington, d.c. | 05/29/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I can vouch for what the other reviewers have written: this is a totally fantastic disc. I'm a big fan of this kind of music and this is as good as it gets. A banjo playing friend of mine told me that the Freighthoppers got so good because they were hired by a railroad company to play for its employees. Whether that's true or not, it adds to the lore and the band certainly sound like they've been playing for railroad folks. The band is really tight and the music has a strong energy. So buy it already!
