"For their previous album Star, Funky Green Dogs put audiences off a bit by releasing a big, brassy disco anthem ("Body") as the lead single. The first few tracks followed its footsteps, but much of the songs after that dived into darker, more intricate club grooves. On Super California, their third outing, the Dogs jump-start things with "You Got Me (Burning Up)". The single, full of disco-diva clichés and funky Latin rhythms that put an even greater spin into the already-dizzying production, is no exception to the slightly airheaded genius that "Body" was. Despite this, Super California is far from abrasive club fare. The arrangements are, in the group's trademark style, stripped down to their barest elements- usually sparse, yet hard-edged house rhythms, occasional synthesizer twinkles, and Tamara Wallace's muscled gospel vocals holding it all together. This paves the way for a somewhat organic sound, as shown in "Be A Part of My Life" and the Jesus-praising "Rise Up". These new environments, while clearly a nice experimental move for the Miami-based trio, may disappoint eager listeners hoping to find a bit more of Star's influence on this record. Nonetheless, Super California is a satisfying testimony to the Dogs' knack for creating hooky and edgy club anthems. It's certainly something to be burning up over (no pun intended)."
