Amazon.comFuture Loop Foundation, a.k.a. Mark Barrott, has learned to expand on the ambient-inspired sound of his earlier work, typified by his first full-length album, Time and Bass. His third record stretches its legs out early, jumping into "Conditions for Living" (Headz Down '99) with washes of high-energy drum & bass. FLF's attack is relentless, as beats furiously cascade along, trumping all other concerns. It's purposefully repetitive, and though it's still "ambient" music, it's not New Age-y or melodic in the slightest. While Barrott has more on his mind than just making you dance, he's no armchair DJ. His work is powerfully rhythmic, with house music inflections and stomach-churning bass lines. However, if you've grown accustomed to the strange wonder that these drum loops are capable of, this record acts as a perfect late-night comedown. --Matthew Cooke
