"This is an incredible disc by a band who truly knows how to write a beautiful song (or 20+ for that matter). Empress' Self-Titled album features incredibly slow yet intricate lo-fi rock in the vein of slowcore legends, Low but with quiet, delicate female vocals. While the songs are incredibly slow and brooding, they are ironically very short with most hovering around the 2-minute mark. Luckily, because of this there are over 20 songs for listeners to enjoy. While at times a few songs feel like unfinished bedroom projects because of this, the vast majority are fleshed out in their brief running time and can only be considered miniature slowcore masterpieces. All in all, Empress is a band who truly finds beauty in sadness and introspection in loneliness."
