Synopsis

A,mazon.com
Along with Alex Patterson's Orb, Future Sound of London traveled the frontiers of what in the early '90s was called ambient house music. This reissue of their first album, Accelerator, shows the group in transition away from conventional techno dance floor techniques and toward the expansive sound of Lifeforms. While tracks like "Stolen Documents" are very much of their time with static, thumping synthesizer sequencer grooves, other compositions, like "Expander" and "Papua New Guinea," still sound as forward looking and kinetic as they did in 1992. Mixing a dub bass-line and the sampled voice of Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), "Papua New Guinea" is an electro-dance symphony that exemplified their cut-and-paste artistry. Accompanying this reissue is a second disc, Papua New Guinea Mix Anthology, with 10 remixes of that signature song. It seems like nine more than anyone actually needs, but it provides a fascinating expanse of theme and variation. You'll find even more on another FSOL disc, Papua New Guinea Translations. --John Diliberto

CD Reviews

CLASSIC ALBUM RE-RELEASED WITH RARE MIXES!
Mark Finch | London, England | 12/11/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Most of you guys probably know ACCELERATOR already. Not only FSOL's debut album, it has also been considered a "highly influential piece of work" during the early stages of ambient house in the early nighties, and is now considered a classic amongst fans of this style. I mean, everybody knows PAPUA NEW GUINEA, right? So, what makes this unique, and a must-buy - even if you have the original version - is that this has a second bonus disc with ten remixes of the classic (and brilliant) PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Some of them were remixed recently - in 2001 I believe - but there are some real gems here. The Simian mix, despite only being three-and-a-half minutes long, is excellent. A kind of funky, accoustic piece. You just have to hear it. The real good stuff here though, are remixes from the original vinyl releases back in the day. The Monsoon mix which has never been available on CD before, is finally here. And there's even the full uncut Andrew Weatherall remix here! This version wasn't even available on the vinyl editions (an edited version - still running at over ten minutes - was available on the 12" and CD single)! There are some remixes that were from the original release that could have been put on here though, just to make the CD complete, such as the JOURNEY TO PYRAMID mix and the HAMISH MCDONALD mix, but these versions are still available on the CD single, so it's not such a bad thing really. It also would have been nice to have 2001 remixes of some of the other tracks on this album, such as EXPANDER (a brilliant track) or IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM, but I guess these tracks aren't as well known as PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Nevertheless, the bonus "PAPUA NEW GUINEA ANTHOLOGY" disc is a joy to behold. At the end of the day, they have paired up a fantastic album with a fantastic remix bonus disc. You really can't go wrong!Truly indespensible!"
