CD Reviews

Fine, Rich, Wonderful Music
X. Pert | 10/07/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is Garnet Rogers's first solo album which he recorded after performing with his brother, the legendary Stan Rogers, for over a decade. While Rogers is essentially a folk artist the CD features a range of styles, from ballad to folk to rock. It demonstrates his strong, rich, deep voice and his virtuosity on guitar, violin, viola and flute. The songs on the CD are not his own, but were written by others, from contemporary songwriters, to Robbie Burns, to the ubiquitous "traditional." All, however, are beautifully and powerfully performed and sung. Buy the CD and be moved."
This is a great CD

"This is a great CD, with lots of really wonderful music. The best is the combination of an instrumental (Carrickfergus) which is just beautiful, simple and spare but multilayered and musically satisfying, and then perfectly melded with the shanty-like ballad, Final Trawl. The sadness, change and hope in both are strong, a truely stunning combination of music, lyrics, and insight. The easy charmer on this CD is Thanksgiving Eve, an inspiring camp-type song of hope, reminiscent of his more complex and mature 'Long March'. As a farmer myself, 'Break the Law' is a strong and heartbreaking song, vivid in its words and harsh delivery. As far as melody and acoutic quality , few are better than ''Music in your eyes' . Actually, his brother, Stan, did 'Music in your eyes' on one of his albums, but Garnet's version is much better, it sounds more sincere, melodic, and from the heart. "Woh me" is somewhat ordinary sweet song of devotion, but the instrumental bridge is truly spectacular - sharp, clear and compelling. This is a great 'car CD' - with songs that stand much re-listening and focused enjoyment and consideration."
