"there's not much new here, the same monk songs the way monk would had wanted them played, except for vocals on a couple of tracks, and a gary bartz composition, an intro of sorts, the pennywhistle call, with gary bartz's wonderful sound which i wanted to continue on into a recording of compositions by bartz.
but to say there's not much new is high compliment. monk's music, not the individual pieces, but his complete work, has become canonized as classical work, best served in the manner a composition by mozart is played or the role of hamlet is played, by being true to the work and imbuing the classics with one's mastery, which is what bartz has done here."
