"The "Who Am I" (1987) album was a long-awaited new studio effort from ex-Spooky Tooth founder, Gary Wright (also of later "Dream Weaver" fame). It features 10 great songs carrying on Gary's signature blend of keyboard-laced funky rock, introspective/spiritual love lyrics, and falsetto vocals!



This album also goes one step further and prominently displays Gary's love of Indian supporting instrumentation (that he would also use on his later "First Signs of Life" (1995) and "Human Love" (2000) albums" including performances by several prominent classical Indian musicians. However, the songs are still rock and roll, with the Indian soloists simply augmenting and flavoring the basic tracks!!



The first track, "Who Am I" was released to classic rock stations as the first single, and "It Ain't Right" (an uncharacteristic driving rock song with minimal keyboards) was later remixed and released as the second single from the album. The last track is also a beautiful keyboard ballad dedicated to Gary's wife, Rose.



My personal favorites on the album are "Love Is On The Line", "Blind Alley", and "It Ain't Right".



Last but certainly not least, most of the songs on this album feature the awesome drum/percussion work of Terry Bozzio (of Zappa, U.K., Missing Persons, drum solo fame). His drum parts are very musical and offer a perfect compliment to Gary's ethereal keyboard layering and the Indian instrumentation!"

"Although Who I Am was not Gary Wright's biggest seller and now it's even out of print, it is nevertheless a wonderful record.The tracks on this fine piece of work can easily be compared to Peter Gabriel's SO. Yet Gary has always had a unique style of his own, so if you are a fan of world music or Gary, this one is worth hunting down."

"Though this particular album/CD is extremely underrated to music lovers, Gary Wright's "Who I Am" is one worth listening to.



My favorite tracks from this compilation of songs are the following:



1) Who I Am

2) Sad Eyes

3) Blind Alley



(Note that "Blind Alley" was, in a way, featured in the criminally underrated 1988 horror movie, "Spellbinder." I, however, have no where or when in the movie the song is played; at the same time, though, I only saw the movie one time. So I would have to view it a few more times.)



Anyway, this CD is wonderful, and I fell in love with it the minute I first played it. If you are a fan of Gary Wright and soft rock, and you see it for sale anywhere, take my advice: GET IT!"
