CD ReviewsA NICE SURPRISE Karen E. Ehlers | Euless, Texas | 02/26/2006 (4 out of 5 stars) "It was surprising but a nice surprise that Gatlin released a live CD. And it really seemed to capture Gatlin and his brothers during one of their concerts when they are in the zone. Gatlin is known for his temperament during his concerts so one never knows what you'll get when he hits the stage. He's mellowed in the last years but in 1990, he was still pretty volatile.
Gatlin's voice is strong and powerful through all of his songs. The medley of hits is nice but by far too brief for some of his more well written songs - and the on-stage gags of his brothers wears thin through the CD. But, when Gatlin takes the stage alone with just his guitar - it's pure magic. The Honey Throated Devil can not be bested by anyone (still) in country music. In quick succession, he brings the listeners to tears with "I've Done Enough Dyin' Today", "The Eagle" (tribute to Willie Nelson), and "8:oo P.M.". And the brothers close out the CD with their stirring rendition of "Alleluia". IMHO, Gatlin is underappreciated and overlooked when it comes to the history of country music. He is one of the finer songsmiths of his generation. If you're a Gatlin fan, more specifically a Larry Gatlin fan - this is a MUST HAVE for your collection." |
