A Gene Gem

"Gene Clark was a superb, terribly underrated American songster, and this is as good as any instance of his other, somewhat more well-known work. The only songs or performances to compare to these are on "The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark." On this still more personally styled collection of songs, Gene Clark explored the quests of his generation, ("The Virgin") ... Or examined his own life's work as an artist and creator, as in a piece of particular beauty,"Spanish Guitar" -the only song I've ever heard Bob Dylan say he wished he had written. Not even collaborators like Robbie Robertson ever received such praise from Bob. As always, Gene's romanticism ("With Tomorow") and full-hearted writing are moving throughout. Gene was an American treasure, and it's a shame that he wasn't better recognized here during his life. This is one prime example of his work - sweet and understated."

"This is Gene Clark on his own. Free of the shadow of Roger McGuinn or Doug Dillard (or the Gosdin brothers from his first "solo" lp) Gene steps out and delivers one of the finest singer/songwriter efforts in my record collection of over 800 albums, cds and tapes. "Spanish Guitar" alone is worth the price of the CD, although my personal favorites are "White Light" and "One In A Hundred". Gene suffered from fear of flying and ironically his career never took off like his more famous bandmates Roger McGuinn, David Crosby or Chris Hillman yet this album is at least the equal to if not better than any of their solo efforts."
