CD Reviews

Georgia, How Could You?
Sally Atman | Redondo Beach, CA United States | 07/17/2003
(2 out of 5 stars)

"I've loved Georgia Brown since the '60s, and pre-ordered this CD. What a disappointment! The cuts from "Porgy and Bess" are rocked up when they should be moody, and the rest of the music is haphazardly put together, making the CD difficult to enjoy. Georgia sounds better than ever, but whoever created the arrangements should be punished!"
There is nothing better than Georgia Brown

"When you listen to Georgia Brown, you realize her voice is like no other pop singer's - It's deep, emotional and powerful. She is, primarily, a belter - but not the Ethel Merman School of Belters who sing with a lot of sound and no emotion.

These two albums are classics - hard to find on vinyl - even harder to find on CD. The arrangements are very typical of the early 60's - (both albums were recorded in 1963) and are written in such a way as to compliment Georgia's unique delivery. Don't expect soft sentimental music from the Gershwin album - she can sing soft and sentimentally and with a lot of pathos, but her real tour-de-force are the belt numbers such as Lord I'm On My Way and It Ain't Necessarily So - her rendition of Summertime is unique and wonderful - very jazzy and swingy.

The other album included here - simply titled Georgia Brown upon it's initial release - is a collection of pop hits and standards - no one can sing As Long As He Needs Me like Georgia Brown - she was the original Nancy in Oliver both on Broadway and in the West End - and her rendition of the standard Don't Take Your Love From Me is one of the best recordings of this item.

Basically if you like beautiful women with huge strong voices - buy this album. If you like soft mood music . . . .well - you probably won't like it - but you don't know what you're missing."
