CD ReviewsPerfect Background Music for a Bachelor's Pad Donnie The B | USA | 09/26/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "While "Night Lights" would be perfect for a romantic evening, it also stands up well to serious examination. The original Philips vinyl LP is fairly rare now, but was one of my most valued jazz albums. It sure is nice that the jazz catalog CD re-issue wave is including this beautiful work of art. Bobby Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Jim Hall on guitar, Art Farmer on trumpet and of course Gerry Mullgan on baritone sax are at the top of their form in this early 1960's small big band date. This was recorded shortly after the Concert Jazz Band period for Mulligan and further testifies to his abilities as a top-notch arranger. You might also check out these earlier big band recordings on Verve - Gerry Mulligan and The Concert Jazz Band "Live At The Village Vanguard" is the one most accessible currently, although there are others to be found on CD." Night Lights Shines Hope Florence | Wilmington De | 02/20/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "The Title song, Night Lights was written by Gerry Mulligan. It is a fine start and finish, shining brightly over the other tunes. Recorded over 40 years ago, this CD is as crisp, inviting and good to listen to, as if the musicians had just stepped out of the recording studio. "In the wee small hours of the morning" never sounded better and will have you thinking of times spent in quiet places, listening to music played beautifully." The best jazz you will find!! Bar none. Gary J. Chenett | michigan | 01/21/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Gerry is my all time favorite of music, he just has the touch and feel that he puts out that makes you know things maybe be bad but listen to him and all will be well.
Jazz and some of the best horns you will ever hear are on his CD's, there is not a bad CD he ever made. So buy him and know if you like jazz and real great artists he wraps them all up in this CD especially. Best bucks I have spent in along time on Mulligan, My favorite!.!!!!" |
