CD Reviews

SUPERB..........
Papetti | Mexico City | 07/15/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gilberto Gil is a genius, and this album originally recorded in 1979 and recently re-mastered is a knock out.

Here you have his fresh compositions, his super eloquence and most importantly that escence of Brazilian beauty he reflects in each of his masterpieces.

This album has many songs that have made it into different compilations as well as recorded by many; my favorites: 1) Here and Now and 2) Maracatu Atomico.

Also, the amazing list of great musicians playing here is:

- Gilberto Gil / Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Percussions

- Sergio Mendes / Synthesizers, Percussion

- Don Grusin / Fender Rhodes

- Michael Sembello / Electric Guitar

- Abraham Laboriel / Bass

- Laudir de Oliveira / Congas, Percussion

- Alex Acuna / Drums

- Gracinha Leporace & Carol Rogers / Background Vocals

- Robertinho Silva / Percussions

- Lee Ritenour / Electric Guitars

- Oscar Castro-Neves / Cavaquinho

etc. etc.

If you are a fan of Gil, you owe it to yourself; if you are not yet, this is a great start point.

Thanks Gilberto for painting magnificent hues in our lives with your masterpieces.........."
Gil tries to enter the English market

"Back in 1979, I went to see Gilberto Gil in concert at Florida State University. Gil was on a tour in the USA trying to break into its' music market with a partly English, partly Portuguese album named Nightingale. Unfortunately for him and many of us music fans, he did not make much of a dent. That is a shame, because this a delightful album with nice uplifting music in various styles of Latin music like samba,Caribbean reggae blended with a more modern sound. Music that is nice to dance to as well as just playing it for a happy atmosphere. If you are an English speaker this is definitely the album to try out first. And if you like lots of rhythms, you will not regret getting this album."
