Malipiero - one of THE under-rated singers of the Century
K. Shilcock | England | 10/21/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)
"Pleasant tone; notable ability to act; intelligent enough to recognise his limitations; immaculate use of words & the score's demands - it is rare to find these inherent in one singer. As with so many, Malipiero was not a widely publicised/sponsored artist. And, like so many, he is largely forgotten today, except for a good contribution to Lina Pagliughi's 1st version of "Lucia" (available from 2-3 record companies @2001). His high notes were limited - no top 'C' evident - & he sometimes added 'H's to help flexibility (though not as much as Gigli). Still, within this frame, he produced versions of arias better than those from most tenors; e.g. "Mignon", "Manon", "Mefistofele", "Faust" (Berlioz), "L'Elisir d'amore".It is evident that some of the transfers on the CD are directly from vinyl, but the general quality is clear if slightly dull on top. LP clicks should have been removed. Do not let it put you off purchasing this wonderful sample of tenor singing."
