Frescobaldi was the greatest Italian composer of organ and keyboard music of the 17th century, and his music influences all of the great German Baroque composers, from Buxtehude to Handel and Bach. Fiori Musicali (Musical Flowers) is a diverse collection of organ music consisting of various toccatas, "kyries," canzones (songs), and various other pieces grouped into three large "Masses." The work was evidently intended for liturgical use, and many of the pieces are based on the appropriate Gregorian chants current at the time. As is usually the case when composers are writing for the church, Frescobaldi's music is of the highest quality. If you're interested in the period, this excellently played and recorded set is the one to have. --David Hurwitz
