Very Surprised

"didn't know much about Gloria de Haven when I purchased this disc. In fact, I'd only seen her in one movie, SUMMER STOCK where she plays Judy Garland's sister. I trust Sepia Records so I thought I'd take a chance and but this cd. Very glad I did ! This is a really wonderful cd. I enjoy it more each time I listen to it. Not sure where these tracks came from since she "officially" does not have any albums to her credit, but glad they dug around in the vaults and found these treasures."

"I never really thought of Gloria de Haven as a songbird--but wow, was I wrong! Her singing on this album more than proves her exceptional talent as a verified songbird; and we get a nice grouping of tracks as well. The sound quality is rather good except for some rather slight distortion here and there; but you'll still enjoy these numbers. The artwork is very nicely done.

The album has many songs on it; and of course I have my favorites. The track set begins with Gloria singing her heart out on "Because of You;" her excellent diction enhances her performance all the more and that's grand. The brass is well used in the arrangement, too. "I See a Million People" has Gloria singing with a backup chorus; but Gloria didn't really need backup; she carries this very well as the backup singers harmonize well. Gloria also gives a most passionate performance of "Who's Sorry Now?" and listen for her to outdo even herself on "Blue Moon;" "Somebody Loves Me" and the upbeat "I Wish I Wuz." Gloria also does justice to "Hold Me Hold Me Hold Me."

"The Closer You Are" is sublime in Gloria's capable hands; and I also enjoy hearing Gloria sing classics like "He's Funny That Way;" "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" with that fantastic piano arrangement; and "Someone to Watch Over Me." "Where Is That Someone for Me" has a particularly lush musical arrangement to accompany Gloria de Haven as she sings; and listen for "So This Is Paris;" "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Carolina in the Morning" which all shine bright when Gloria performs them with panache!

"Time After Time" is yet another classic that gets the royal treatment from Gloria who delivers this faultlessly while "Won't You Save Me" is both romantic and easy on the ear. "Red Hot Pepper Pot" changes gears for an energetic tune that Gloria aces effortlessly; and "Life" is equally bright. The album ends with two fine numbers with Gloria again at her best; we get "Love, Love, Love" and "I Hadn't Anyone Till You." What a excellent way to end the album!

This is a must-have for fans of Gloria de Haven; and people who like classic pop vocals and show tunes will want this for their music collections. Gloria's talent was truly remarkable and we're all better off for her sharing her gift with us."
