"I listened to Hill's recording in the music library at the Oberlin Conservatory, where I study harpsichord. Hill's playing is full of the most expressive imagination and understanding of the music. He has so many ideas!! I found myself hearing new rhythms I wasn't aware of, hearing new lines in the music. Hill has a fluid conception of tempo and the most carefully planned articulation. Recorded at a live concert in Freiburg, Germany, where he teaches at the Hochschule, Hill opens the variations with an improvised prelude on the harmonic progression that the variations are built on. The harpsichord he uses (which was built by his brother) has a lush, gorgeous tone, and the recording quality is superb."
