CD Reviews

It's Lovely to discover the Nightingales of India, AGAIN :)

(5 out of 5 stars)

"i've listened to practically everything under the sun that asha bhosle and lata mangeshkar have sung, and asha bhosle and lata mangeshkar have sung practically everything under the sun. now that's alot of singing ;) keep in mind that the songs to which i am referring extend far beyond this compilation, and anything which is offered on amazon.com. but for anyone who may be a newcomer to such music should first of all consider themselves blessed:) because they are about to enter into one of the most unique and enchanting worlds on earth. now, the title of this CD may be golden voices from the silver screen, and it may list the singer as "various artists" but that's a teeny lie :) of course, technically speaking, it is correct, as other singers such as mohammed rafi, kishore kumar, mukesh, and shamshad begum ARE included here most definitely, however, don't be fooled, as the majority of songs on this compilation are sung by the 2 primary aforementioned divas of indian music, asha bhosle and lata mangeshkar...granted, each singer has their own place in hindi film music, but none so big as the niche carved by the 2 filmi goddesses, asha and lata. these 2 must be HEARD to be believed...this compilation contains music from primarily the 50's and 60's, which is why i would recommend it so highly....of course there are musical gems from every decade and beyond found in india, but the 50's and 60's were the most magical times, musically speaking. while i think it's impossible for any set number of songs to be gathered for a proper intro into the world of hindi film music, this CD still manages to provide a glimpse of the beyond, a rare insight into a magical world- that enchanting realm of nightingales singing, to melodies of every color- those which may never grow old, and those of which one may never tire.after having listened to thousands upon thousands (or at the very least hundreds upon hundreds) of songs sung by the 2 Nightingales (Asha & Lata- who are both sisters, by the way!), i find myself rediscovering them on this compilation, the sound quality of which i might add, is amazing. As far as these kind of songs go, seeing as they date so far back, the sound quality is often compromised because of lesser technology (which can either be charmingly nostalgic, or devastating), but I must say here, this company did a very good job of producing this CD because it's sound is FANTASTIC- loud and clear, rich and sparkling, and that's a refreshment given that the majority of recordings produced in India (and which make up the majority of my collection) are often at the mercy of the time period in which they were produced and the record company which produced them :( unfortunately :(but not to fret, that hasn't stopped me from discovering the riches which india has offered up, as if to the Gods. again, i have listened to many compilations- The Golden Collection, Revival Series, Legends, Rare Gems, etc. but have come to know them so well that alas, i am left seeking new grounds, in search of a new means by which to rediscover these enchanting, exotic Divas. And I have found it here, on this CD, which is really quite a catch ;)all in all, what am i trying to say? Here at Amazon.com, you are getting the rare chance to see what these divas, and indian film music as a whole, is all about. don't forget that there are volumes 1 and 2 in this same series as well, which are both phenomenal, as well as other solo CD's of Asha and Lata's divine works of art, listed on amazon's website- just look them up! like the commercial for Chanel perfume says: "Here's your chance- Take it!""
