"The "New Supremes" (as Motown called them in 1989), may never be mentioned in the same sentence, but these three attractive young ladies tried hard to make names for themselves, and this very winning and energetic album ranks among the best 80s dance pop albums. Best known songs were "Your Sweetness" and the Supremes cover "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart", but just as good (better in the case of the latter) were the slow, dreamy title track and "I Need Your Love.""

Not Quite The Supremes, But Close!

"During the New Jack Era, Motown sought out to re-create the magic that captured America in the 1960s. They did this by producing imitations of their earlier success stories (Boys - Jackson 5, Today - Four Tops, Good Girls - Supremes). Needless to say, the Good Girls were in the list of failures (and there were quite a few). They charted a modest R&B hit in "Your Sweetness" (No. 6), but they could never fully grasp the R&B audience, which hampered mainstream success.



But that is not to say their debut album isn't good. In fact, I would say it's BETTER than most debuts on the label at the time. The great uptempo opener "My Love Is Real", aforementioned "Your Sweetness", "I Need Your Love", and "You Ain't Nobody" is as good a 4-track start than you can get. Other tracks worth mentioning are the graceful "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love" and the cozy "All For Your Love".



In retrospect, the Good Girls were a product of the failed attempt by Motown to re-create their storied legacy. The trio would release a sophomore album three years later to dismal results and disband soon after. However, their debut remains commendable. 6 quality tracks are worth listening to, one being a top 10 R&B hit. They may have fell through the cracks, but quality music is definitely present on this record. A good-buy if you come across it.

They Never Did Become The "New Supremes"

"In the late-'80s and early-'90s, Motown promoted new acts like The Boys as the new Jackson 5, Today as the new Four Tops, and the Good Girls were pushed as the new Supremes. Today and the Boys enjoyed number one R&B hits, while the Good Girls charted with a few singles, never reaching the high expectations. The trio debuted in 1989 with All For Your Love, and hit a decent No. 32 on the R&B charts. The new jack swing-styled first release single, "Your Sweetness" struck the top-10 on the R&B charts (No. 6) and hit No. 16 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. The three lady's would equal the success of "Your Sweetness" with their second release single "Love Is Like an Itch," which is a new jack styled cover of the Supremes' original hit version from the '60s. The third release single from All For Your Love was "I Need Your Love." Though the Supreme knock off's debut was a winning release, it failed to gain mainstream listeners and the Good Girls would give it another shot in 1992, with Just Call Me."
