"Four and a half stars.



I have been a faithful visitor to the Willowtip website ever since discovering Arsis, and conseuqently becoming a fan of the hilarious Crotchduster, and the technically insane and brutal Necrophagist. Still, I have tasted a bit of the other meats on their roster, and was not as impressed. Recently, though, I had been reading the stuff they were saying about Gorod, and I was interested.



Hesitant to pay any money for a CD I had heard not a second of, I plunked down the money at a local Tower, and was set adrift on memory bliss...



This album is oh so sweet. Oh, yes, the lyrics suck on the highest level with single words strung together with less order and sense than you, the reader, could ever possibly imagine. But the songs oh the songs! If you are a fan of brutally technical riffage which still takes the time and care to caress those nerves that have not completely turned to the dark side with, not melodic, but catchy and discernible riffs that instigate the most enjoyable and frantic kind of headbanging, then you must give Gorod a try.

For those of you who are skeptical, I do not want to try and have you believe that Gorod has tapped a distinctively new style of death metal, but the songwriting is superb, and you get what we all should ask of all musicians regardless of genre: proficient and personal style.

Gorod matches these requirements perfectly and throws down a mighty move for sheer brutality mixed with frenetic groove in a genre that is continuously moving towards traitor territory."

"ok so im at my local record store, DEATHGASM records. awesome place, awesome music, awesome people. anyways i was shopping through their bargain bin. i come across this cd GOROD. it was 2 dollars. there wasnt a scratch on it at all. i had to give a listen before i bought it though being it was 2 dollars. so the owner Alex popped it in. the intro by far one of the greatest intros to an album i have ever heard. i stopped it after track two and bought it. i got home and put in and listened to the rest of it. one of my favorite albums. this is a must have for all fans of necrophagist or just awesome guitar riffs and solos."

Prepare To Be Blown Away

"The beginning song, "Gutting Job", starts off with a wicked bass line and prepares you for the ride of your life. Just by listening to that one song, you are ready to take the Gorod challenge and listen to the complexity and talent that is known as "Neurotripsicks". It was originally released in 2004 in France under the name Gorgasm, but when the band inked a deal with Willowtip records, the band changes their name to Gorod to avoid confusion with the Chicago brutal death band of the same name.



Okay, now back to the CD. If there is anything that blows my mind, it is the song structure. This is one of the most enjoyable traits in technical death metal, you start listening, and then the unexpected hits you like a falling piano. "Smoked Skulls", the next tracks, packs in more memorable riffs that keep you interested. You don't want to give this CD up. Now, we go to "Hunt to the Weaks". The tempo is stepped up, but the guitar riffs are again, complex, and neo-classical style. Now you are drawn in. "Beware of Tramps" starts us off again with a creative and technical guitar lead, and it is a really catchy song. Gorod does this excellently with their songs: they show off their undeniable guitar talent, but they keep you awake by not following simple song structures.



Okay, I think that you now have an idea of how this CD will turn out, so I won't need to explain the rest of the tracks. We do have an instrumental thrown in with the track "Neuronal Disorder State", which doesn't use the crazy and excellent vocal style used here, and that song may be one of the best on there, next to "Smoked Skulls" and "Gutting Job".



Overall, you need this if you love technical death metal. It's not brutal, but it's excellent and memorable. Gorod, along with bands such as Gory Blister, Psycroptic, Martyr, Arsis, and much more, show us that technical death metal is not going to die off soon. Highly recommended!"
