CD ReviewsGreat Early Green Recording on the Jazztime Label ! ! ! Eddie Landsberg | Tokyo, Japan | 02/27/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "The story behind this session, as explained in the liner notes, is that drummer Dave Bailey, one of the first cats to dig Grant Green when he came to NY rang up Grant when he was asked to put this date together for the Jazztime label in NYC. In return, Grant returned the favor a few weeks later by pulling in Bailey plus bassist Ben Tucker for a Blue Note session a few weeks later. (The year is 1961.)Featuring tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, Green fans might be disappointed in that he doesn't play as much as they probably would have liked him to... however, don't let this dissuade you from getting it... his solo on Baby, You Should Know It should be studied and memorized by every Jazz guitarist and Jazz afficianado anyway ! ! ! Haynes' was another underappreciated musical genius equal to Grant. His clear tone, nicely swinging bop sensibility yet bluesy and aritculate phrasing make this CD a brilliant treat.... and yet another treat is the presence of Billy Gardner on piano ("
