"I discovered this band being a fan of Godgory's "Resurrection" album and accidentally discovering through reading on them that one of the members has a gothic-doom based side project. Well, obviously, why would I not go forth (and die) and check this out ? I would not be disappointed.
As with Godgory, Grave Flowers isnt really a band I go into expecting an album full of masterpieces. Some may take that as an insult, but just listen for a moment. Godgory are great at some of the things they do, while others come off forced (but pretty good nonetheless). As is the same with a number of bands, as is kind of the same with this album. However, that is not the way one should go into listening to a band's side project. The reason for that very term, side project, is that this band is not their main root. It is meant to have a different sound, and it very much so does. What we have here is fields covered in gloom: nicely done fairly slow and mid-tempo guitar parts (acoustic and electric) that drip with melancholy, depressing keyboard segments and heartfelt words of sorrow. "Feature Of Future", "Sleep Demons Sleep" & "Cold Despair" are easily standout tracks on the album, while the rest hold up nearly just as well. I was going to go into each song individually, but after attempting such a feat, my reactions were almost the same for every track (not to say that there is boredom here, they just tend to use the same ingredients). If you look well enough you will find some really fantastic slightly-hidden musicianship amongst the ashes here.
Thankfully I really enjoyed this album (I cannot stand grabbing a CD to sit down with and not enjoying it.) and recommend it in general to fans of: Sentenced, My Dying Bride (their less Death oriented style), Katatonia (mid-era to more recent), Godgory (Of course), Type O Negative, Jack Frost, The Eternal & Lacrimas Profundere. An album filled up with heavy gloom, atmosphere & tastefulness: Why wouldn't you add this to your collection ? You wouldn't! So go get it and support these guys. And all the other bands mentioned. They need to eat, you selfish fools!
