Amazon.com With its cinematic mix of dramatic brass fanfares, crowd noise, chorus, twangy guitar, and mandolins, "The Lonely Bull" was as much a novelty as an instrumental hit, but it served as an ideal launching pad for Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. During the 1960s, they created some of the most popular instrumental music of all time, blending catchy tunes, Mexican dance rhythms, and a lively brassiness. "Spanish Flea" and "Tijuana Taxi" may best define the style, but Alpert possessed keen insight into the tradition of lighthearted danceable music, touching on swing in "Getting Sentimental over You," and doo-wop in Leiber and Stoller's "Love Potion No. 9." The movie themes "Never on Sunday" and "Zorba the Greek" tie the music even more strongly to the '60s, while expanding the group's inclusion of ethnic themes and sunny climes. It's the lightheartedness that ties this material together as much as the trumpets and trombones. Even "A Taste of Honey," a tune given moody treatment by everyone else who recorded it--from the Beatles to jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris--becomes irresistibly cheerful. CD ReviewsHerb Alpert & TJB Are a Pure Delight Steve Vrana | Aurora, NE | 02/19/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "Herb Alpert & the Tijauna Brass were an anomaly during the mid-sixties. When the British invasion was dominating the radiowaves, here comes Los Angeles-raised Alpert with his south-of-the-border sound and hits the charts with a dozen instrumentals. [Not even the Ventures hit the charts that many times with instrumentals!]The string of hits bagan in 1962 with "Lonely Bull" on Alpert's own A&M Records. [He's the "A" and Jerry Moss is the "M."] It was three years before the next hit, "A Taste of Honey." But in 1966, Alpert and the TJB hit the charts six more times. Their songs were heard everywhere--The Dating Game used "Spanish Flea" as its theme song, a chewing gum company used "Mexican Shuffle" in one of its commercials.The music had a broad-based appeal. [My dad couldn't stand my Beatles albums, but he bought Alpert's albums.] This is infectious music and Alpert's trumpet playing is always tasteful. The music is not in the heavy style of an Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding but its more a mellow spunky South of the Border Style such as Carlos Santana. Herb's Trumpet Playing is a just a joy to listen to and the twelve hits compiled on this record are quite representative of his style. The backing musicians add alot of special elements whether it be with maracas, guitars, xylophones, or other not everyday instruments. Also, this record adds a great deal of light hearted fun. And whats wrong with a little fun in one's music collection. So go out and dance the tango or merengue to some of these spunky numbers. Or just lsiten to Herb and his cronies play some good music."
