CD Reviews

Greenleaf's "Deep Roots" Nourishes the Music Scene
Kele Douglas Perkins | Whittier, CA United States | 08/17/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The long-awaited recording debut of the Whittier (Calif.) band Greenleaf demonstrates the incredible potential of this quartet, led by vocalist Pete Torres and guitarist Sol. "Deep Roots" is simply a studio affirmation of what fans at the band's live shows throughout California already know: Greenleaf meshes various styles to produce music to be reckoned with. In particular, Torres' vocals are outstanding, as he combines great range with excellent tone and control (not to mention some songwriting contribution, although Sol makes the most significant contribution in this area). The CD's second track gives an early example of Torres' uncanny ability to balance a pure melody with a rock edge: "She Gives Me Reason" is but one of several songs on this song-heavy CD that could be bona fide radio hits with just a little exposure. Although Sol has since left the band, a report of Greenleaf's demise at this point would be as premature as it would be unfortunate, given the unbelievable promise of the band, as proven in this recording. Recommendation: as one of the best non-major label CDs I've ever purchased, I advise that you buy the CD now and keep your fingers crossed that Greenleaf makes a return to the studio .... and a town near you."
Innovative sound

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This group has done something that many other artists of today have failed to do. They have come up with an original sound as well as thought and emotion provoking lyrics. This CD is my favorite in my collection. I listen to it often yet never tire of the music."
