Another unavailable brilliant Blue Note CD

"Quite what the parameters of Blue Note's release policy are is difficult to fathom. This 1997 album, recorded in Brooklyn is one of Greg Osby's most satisfying outings.He allows the band an enormous amount of space to develop their ideas. In particular pianist Jason Moran gets some really extended solos, Eric Harland on drums is mixed very forward, and Tim Hagans on trumpet gets to duet with Osby and solo extensively.Add some excellent percussion work from Jeff Haynes and some telling touches from Mark Shim on Tenor and you have a thoughful and well put together program. Osby plays alto sax throughout, with 9 of the 10 tracks being his own compositions, and only "Tenderly" (track 9) a reworking.Favourite tracks are "Six of One" "the 13th floor" and "Soldan", but its all good. A special mention ought to be made of Osby's tone and control which is a significant mixture in the stew.When (if?) Blue Note get to re-release this album it ought to be a must buy, so you ought to check back here on a regular basis. Whilst I mention it, Blue Note are not the only company capable of strange deletion decisions - James Carter's excelllent "Jurrasic Classics" is also out of print at the time of writing, and that's one to check as well!"
