CD Reviews

Good Solid Blues Interpretation
John Mcgenn | Coventry,UK | 06/04/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I like it. I play it a lot. I love earlier work be it heavy rock (Split,Bomb) or blues based (Crosscut Saw/Black Diamond). I saw them live at my local pub venue just 2 years ago. The old stuff went down really well but I would have liked to hear one or two off this album.I also have a live album which covers some blues classics and shows that this album reflects how the band do play at times and is a tribute to a man who obviously inspired some of Tony's early work.Well worth a few quid of anyone's money."
Capable Of More Than This
JOHN SPOKUS | BALTIMORE, MARYLAND United States | 11/06/2000
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Tony McPhee is a great blues guitarist; and on this 1997 release he pays homage to one of his influences, Howlin' Wolf. Problem is the performances here do little in the way of enhancing or re-interpretting this great material. McPhee is a guy who is capable of so much more, both in terms of purely playing the blues and composing his own material. This release is even recorded in a very generic, lifeless fashion. To make things worse, he released a similar album of Muddy Waters covers two years later that is stuck in this same mode. C'mon Tony, write some new songs and produce albums the way you used to."
