Tribal, psychobilly blues is the best way to describe Gun Club's energetic death rock, but the band's career seemed doomed from the get-go due to leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce's reputation as an unreliable wildman, and well-publicized bouts of drunkenness dogged him throughout his career. Formed in Los Angeles in the early '80s, the band were vaguely aligned with similarly roots-inspired groups like X and the Blasters, but later picked up and relocated to the Lower Eastside, resting more comfortably around the New York downtown set and Pierce's mentors, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.' -All Music GuideLarger Than Live was recorded in 1992 and never before released. Excellent Live Translation

"Worth it for the first five songs. Excellent live recording. Captures Jeffery Lee Pierce and the Gun Club in what seems to me to be prime form. Jeffery's compelling, near ugly weird intervals backed by intelligent straight forward real swingin' underground rock. That outside blues swing sound really comes out here. Beautiful stuff. Band is tight but I probably wouldn't care if it weren't for Pierce. Not even into vocals much but he's the spice that makes the thing work.

Surprised more people haven't reviewed this. Probably scared the live venue wouldn't get it. Of the 4 or 5 Gun Club recordings I have this is the one I like best right now. These guys aren't really studio wizards and their sound comes off best live and raw. I'm always amazed the president of the Blondie fan club could morph into such an interestingly outside singer performer. Can't say he's the reincarnation of Howlin' Wolf but the comparison is interesting and valid."
