Synopsis
Album Description Elegant, masterful trio recordings from one of Sweden's national treasures. Mats Gustafsson (reeds), Sten Sandell (piano), and Raymond Strid (drums) set course for a sublime oblivion, driven by this longstanding group's unique brand of instrumental telepathy. For those previously acquainted with Mr. Gustafsson's power-soul-honk, another dimension of his estimable facility is on full display here, conjuring empathic textures within and without Sandell's world-class keystrokes and Strid's titanic structures. Scintillating. |
CD ReviewsGlorious Euro-free jazz of the highest order Jan P. Dennis | Monument, CO USA | 06/12/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "This kind of thing doesn't always work. Why not? Lot's of times, it just isn't adequately grounded in a soundscape the average listener can relate to. Coming out of a kind of Euro free-jazz context, more or less successfully purveyed by artists like John Butcher, Evan Parker, Peter Brotzman, Joelle Leandre, John Stevens, Polwechsel, Frisque Concordance, and Georg Graewe, this kind of music often comes across as heady, self-focused, and esoteric.
These lads, much to their credit, have figured out how to make the avant-garde likable. Quite an achievement, if you ask me. Although not the kind of music that fans of the Rippingtons, Kenny G, and Chuck Mangione will cotton to, Norrkoping nevertheless operates in territory that anyone with big ears will be able to appreciate. Mats Gustaffson (various wind instruments) and Raymond Strid (drums) are names anyone familiar with Euro free jazz will recognize. The ringer is pianist Sten Sandell, a player of huge consequence, if this disc is in any way typical of his instrumental prowess. Coming out of a Marilyn Crispell/Irene Schweizer/Georg Graewe bag, Sandell stamps these proceeding with a huge and entirely engaging presence. One of the better out offerings of 2005." |
